Jim Thorpe was originally named Mauch Chunk which means “sleeping bear” (named after the shape of one of its mountains when viewed from a high vantage point on Flagstaff Mountain), and the town has a rich history beginning in the early 1800s. We carry and excellent selection of local history books, including many titles by Arcadia Publishing which tell the story of how Mauch Chunk together with neighboring towns of the Panther Valley provided the fuel for America’s rise to a world power during the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
